Education

DIWA sponsors underprivileged children to attend private schools at primary, secondary and postgraduate levels. Fees are paid, and equipment such as uniforms, books and pencils are provided.  Support is also given to public schools in the form of infrastructure development, school supplies, and training. DIWA has provided educational materials and school bags to 247 rural children in Niger Republic. DIWA has sponsored 13 secondary school aged girls from impoverished backgrounds in Niger and Koki States of Nigeria for private schooling, extra tutorial, skills development programme, mentoring, and regular excursions to socio-historical places of interest. With $130/month/child, you can sponsor a child into a private secondary school that has children from privileged backgrounds, extra tutorial, skills development mentoring and excursions.

Water

In most localities throughout West Africa, water supply is completely unpredictable. Days and sometimes even weeks can pass without water, and then it may return only briefly at inconvenient times. The Development Initiative installs storage tanks to collect the water when it flows. These tanks provide a free source of water to poor communities of 500 or more people. DIWA is also dig wells and rehabilitate bore holes to provide villages with an easily accessible source of safe water. Over the last 6 years, DIWA has provided 11 wells in rural communities, 30 water tanks to urban slums, and 2 rehabilitated bore holes for the Oru Refugee Camp, providing accessible water for over 29,000 people in Nigeria. Just $950 can provide a community a community of 500 with a water tank; $1, 300 can supply a rural village a modern well.

Orphan aid

Government orphanages are not well maintained. The children are given minimal food, which has little nutritional value. Orphans from refugee families also live in dire conditions. They are often under-nourished, unable to receive medical attention, and cannot afford the transport or fees to attend school. DIWA improves the lives of these orphans by renovating orphanage buildings, improving the water supply, constructing playground equipment, advocating their rights at state government level, liaising with those who can provide social and emotional care, and providing healthy food such as meat and fresh fruit. Some orphans are also sponsored to attend high-quality schools. $28/orphan/month is enough to sponsor an orphan into private schools.

Health Care

For poor people, the cost of medicine to treat everyday diseases is out of reach. Children’s lives are often lost because their family cannot afford to treat common illnesses such as malaria or typhoid. Working with local pharmacies, medical supplies may be provided to those who are assessed as unable to pay themselves. DIWA has provided medication for over 2, 000 rural families in Niger Republic, and over 5, 000 refugees on the Oru Refugee Camp in Ogun State of Nigeria. DIWA currently provides fortnightly medical check-ups, treatments, and quarterly new clothes and shoes for 33 orphans in Minna and the Oru Refugee Camp of Nigeria. $30/month/orphan will provide timely medical attention and maintain normal growth.
